Variations for an Odd Band is an exploration of how far a musical theme can be stretched from its original form and still sound coherent. The piece takes a wide swath of genres as its canvas, encompassing a musical theater pit band, a kind of distorted techno music, and Also Sprach Zarathustra. It was written for the Hindemith Ensemble's inaugural tour of Germany.
