Inspired neither by the insect nor the style of ragtime piano, the “stride” in this piece rather comes from two instruments simultaneously playing together and separately, each with their own tempi and harmonies, which combine to create a complex, unpredictable counterpoint. This music is sparse and often ambient, piano and vibraphone walking around each other on long, spindly legs.
