Note
Memory was composed at the invitation of flutist Catherine Gregory, her prompt being “the essential nature of breath.” Roethke’s terse and mysterious poem, which begins with the lines “In the slow world of dream / We breathe in unison”, seemed the perfect response. Everything in the musical setting has an inward and an outward gesture, each thought sung over a pair of bars. But with each musical breath, the music settles in a slightly different harmonic wallow.
