At Elise Frawley’s suggestion, I wrote her a piece that has to do with song forms. Everybody Has a Sad Secret is a ballad which proceeds in alternating verses. A strummed accompaniment underscores bursts of melody, heard each time with slightly different inflections, as if the lyrics had changed. The music is in an intimate, confessional mode without histrionics.
