Parting Friends was written for pianist Lara Downes, at her suggestion to write a short piano piece based on an early American tune. I turned to one of my favorite Sacred Harp songs, Parting Friends (267), arranging it over a gentle ostinato, which becomes a downward sequence, and in the second verse, a mensuration canon. Distant fragments of Thomas Tertius Noble’s hymn tune Come, Labor On appear over simpler counterpoint in the coda.
